Hybrid & Electric Vehicles Forum 2014
According to the International Energy Agency, the number of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles reached 180 000 in 2012. Based on this study the number is projected to swell to 20 million vehicles by 2020. However, this number depends on three crucial factors; battery development, infrastructure development and legislative support. Recently designed Lithium-Sulfur batteries can store four times more energy in comparison with conventional Lithium- Ion batteries. As a result, infrastructure development is lagging behind vehicle development. This goes hand in hand with state subsidies. As for legislative support, a Pan-European directive/regulation for setting targets does not exist, yet many governments have decided to subsidize hybrid & electric vehicle sales. But is this the only remedy?
